Win as a Team #1: Crucial Conversations
When stakes are high and communication is crucial, it’s easy to get caught up in the conversation. Words matter and our emotions can take over, making it difficult to stay focused and productive.
Words like “but” and “however” can signal that your’re about to disagree with the other person. And this is where the crucial conversations come in. It’s important to keep the conversation productive and focused on the issue at hand. Here are some tips to help you navigate crucial conversation in the right direction.
Building on Ideas:
-
“Yes, and…” This classic improv technique adds to the existing idea and pushes the conversation forward. For example, “Yes, and we could also consider targeting a wider audience for this campaign.”
-
“That’s a great point, what if we also…” This acknowledges their contribution and smoothly introduces your addition.
-
“I like that approach, how can we make it even stronger?” This invites them to collaborate on refining the idea.
Encouraging Participation:
-
“What do you think?” or “Does anyone have any other ideas?” Open the floor for others to contribute.
-
“I’d love to hear your perspective on this.” Specifically invite someone to share their thoughts.
Finding Common Ground:
-
“Here’s what I understand…” Briefly summarize the other person’s point to confirm understanding.
-
“I see your concern, perhaps we can…” Acknowledge their worry and propose a solution together. Using Inclusive Language:
-
“We” instead of “I” to emphasize teamwork.
-
“Let’s brainstorm some solutions together.” This creates a shared ownership of the problem-solving process.
Let’s build bridges, not walls!
